With more time spent at home during the COVID-19 pandemic, hearing therapy tools are more vital than ever to encourage proactive practice as rehabilitation can be an important component for successful outcomes. Clinicians are instrumental in motivating and equipping patients with the appropriate training resources to drive desired outcomes.

Here are a few adult-based resources to share with your patients:

Hearing therapy tips handout

These hearing therapy tips help instill confidence in hearing capabilities through varied level activities. Moreover, app and web solutions are also provided for language and word recognition lessons.

Telephone with Confidence

Want to provide resources to your patients to help with using their phone? The Telephone with Confidence program is a free service consisting of a toll-free number and rotating list of words and phrases to follow along with online as they practice using the telephone with an implantable hearing solution.

Communication Corner 

 Cochlear’s Communication Corner provides specific programs and resources that can be utilized and completed in the comfort of home. These can be tailored to meet any individual’s listening and language needs. The adult programs and activities are designed to improve listening, encourage conversations and instill confidence. Activities focus on detection, discrimination, identification and comprehension, in addition to telephone communications, music appreciation and pitch perception improvement.

Bring Back the Beat

The Bring Back the Beat app is designed to help cochlear implant recipients reconnect with music through a self-managed, game-based practice tool that facilitates music appreciation and pitch perception.  Users can monitor their own progress as they advance through the various levels.

Adult Home-based Hearing Therapy Manuals

A clinician’s version of the Adult Home-Based Hearing Therapy Manuals provides a guide for establishing an appropriate training level for newly activated CI patients and helps to better manage time spent on training of auditory skills.

The recipient manual includes a Hearing Therapy Exercise Plan, which can be completed by the clinician and the recipient for in-home training use.

The cochlear implant journey doesn’t stop at surgery.

Hearing therapy, or rehabilitation, may be an important component for successful hearing outcomes. As clinicians, you are instrumental in getting your patients motivated and equipped with the appropriate training resources to improve listening skills and communication strategies to drive desired outcomes.

On top of that, you are managing the ever-growing demands of your practice and patient population. Finding sufficient time to train each newly activated CI patient on auditory skills may be difficult.

It enables the patient to practice within their own listening environment, rather than the controlled environmental conditions within the clinic. Home-based practice tools also allow patients the opportunity to become more proficient at listening to their most frequent communication partners.

Beginning early October 2019, all adult cochlear implant system and upgrade kits will include Cochlear’s Adult Home-Based Hearing Therapy Manual. A clinician’s version of the manual can be ordered directly from your Cochlear representative or can be downloaded and printed online. This manual will guide you in establishing an appropriate training level for each of your newly activated CI patients and help to better manage time spent on training of auditory skills.

5 ways your patients can use free time to improve listening skills

With more time at home as a result of recent global events, this is an opportunity for your patients to work on listening skills at home. 

If your patients are homebound, encourage them to try out these listening activities:

1. Practice focused listening while watching the TV news

For example, catching up with current affairs is one way to incorporate focused listening into daily routine. It also provides a chance to connect visual and auditory cues.

2. Play games

Light-hearted games provide many opportunities for natural conversation to occur. Not only do they require learning how to play the game, but also actively listening and communicating with the friends and family involved.

Ideally, the game should require both listening and communication. Consider games such as Celebrity Heads, Taboo, Trivial Pursuit, Rummy or Go Fish.

3. Practice with someone

Practicing with a partner can build skills in recognizing commonly heard phrases. The partner can say the sentence. Without lip reading, the recipient can try to repeat as many words as possible. Then, the partner can express which words are correct and encourage the use of strategies to clarify parts of the sentence that may be wrong.

Using phrases, such as “can you repeat?”, “did you say…?” or “can you say it a different way?” are all recommended.

It’s best to use words, phrases and sentences that are used in everyday life, social activities or in the workplace so they’re more familiar.

4. Reading aloud, audiobooks and YouTube

Listening to someone reading aloud from a written passage or listening to audiobooks while following along with a printed copy of the book can be a good way to re-learn the rhythm and pattern of sentences and individual words. It is also helpful for identifying words in connected speech.

5. Use music and lyrics to help word recognition

Reading lyrics and listening to music can be a great way to recognize words.
