A new AudiologyOnline series is now open for registration, Cochlear Case Studies Pediatric Series. Cochlear Case Studies is designed to provide professionals with a deeper knowledge and insight about cochlear implants through the use of case studies.

Course 1: Encouraging Consistent Device Use

Wednesday, April 21st, 2021 at 12 pm EDT

Presenter: Elizabeth Preston, AuD, CCC-A

In this session, Dr. Preston will share a case and provide tips for encouraging consistent device use. After this course, participants will be able to list special considerations for implantation in children under 12 months of age, describe how data logging information can be used by professionals to support full-time CI device use and explain the importance of full-time device use for pediatric cochlear implant recipients.

Course 2: Candidacy

Presenter: Kristin Gravel, AuD, CCC-A, PASC

In this session, Dr. Gravel will share a case and provide information about candidacy for our youngest recipients. After this course, participants will be able to list candidacy criteria for cochlear implants in pediatrics, describe topics that may be helpful when counseling families who are considering cochlear implantation for their child and list cochlear implant accessories that may be helpful for families of young children.

Course 3: Supporting Bimodal and Bilateral Device Use

In this session, Dr. Nemeth will share a case and provide information about supporting bimodal and bilateral device use in young children. After this course, learners will define bimodal listening as it relates to cochlear implants in young children, list considerations for bilateral implantation vs bimodal listening for young children and describe features of cochlear implants that may be of benefit to young children who are bimodal listeners.

In the United States, the Cochlear Nucleus cochlear implant system is intended for use in children 9 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. Children 2 years of age or older may demonstrate severe to profound hearing loss bilaterally for both series of implants.

In Canada, the Cochlear Nucleus Profile Plus (CI600) Series Implant System is intended for use in children 9 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. The Cochlear Nucleus Profile (CI500) Series and the Cochlear Nucleus Freedom Series (CI24RE (CA) and (ST), and CI422) Implant System is intended for use in children 12 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. Children 2 years of age or older may demonstrate severe to profound hearing loss bilaterally for both series of implants.
