A new AudiologyOnline series is now open for registration, Cochlear Case Studies Pediatric Series. Cochlear Case Studies is designed to provide professionals with a deeper knowledge and insight about cochlear implants through the use of case studies.

Course Details

Course 1: Encouraging Consistent Device Use

Wednesday, April 21st, 2021 at 12 pm EDT

Presenter: Elizabeth Preston, AuD, CCC-A

In this session, Dr. Preston will share a case and provide tips for encouraging consistent device use. After this course, participants will be able to list special considerations for implantation in children under 12 months of age, describe how data logging information can be used by professionals to support full-time CI device use and explain the importance of full-time device use for pediatric cochlear implant recipients.

Course 2: Candidacy

Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at 12 pm EDT

Presenter: Kristin Gravel, AuD, CCC-A, PASC

In this session, Dr. Gravel will share a case and provide information about candidacy for our youngest recipients. After this course, participants will be able to list candidacy criteria for cochlear implants in pediatrics, describe topics that may be helpful when counseling families who are considering cochlear implantation for their child and list cochlear implant accessories that may be helpful for families of young children.

Course 3: Supporting Bimodal and Bilateral Device Use

Wednesday, May 19th, 2021 at 12 pm EDT

Presenter: Meghan Nemeth, AuD, CCC-A

In this session, Dr. Nemeth will share a case and provide information about supporting bimodal and bilateral device use in young children. After this course, learners will define bimodal listening as it relates to cochlear implants in young children, list considerations for bilateral implantation vs bimodal listening for young children and describe features of cochlear implants that may be of benefit to young children who are bimodal listeners.

In the United States, the Cochlear Nucleus cochlear implant system is intended for use in children 9 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. Children 2 years of age or older may demonstrate severe to profound hearing loss bilaterally for both series of implants.

In Canada, the Cochlear Nucleus Profile Plus (CI600) Series Implant System is intended for use in children 9 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. The Cochlear Nucleus Profile (CI500) Series and the Cochlear Nucleus Freedom Series (CI24RE (CA) and (ST), and CI422) Implant System is intended for use in children 12 to 24 months of age who have bilateral profound sensorineural deafness and demonstrate limited benefit from appropriate binaural hearing aids. Children 2 years of age or older may demonstrate severe to profound hearing loss bilaterally for both series of implants.

This Q&A with Dr. Matt Carlson, Neurotologist and Professor of Otolaryngology, explores the content and impact of Headmirror and the new mobile app as well.

What is Headmirror?

Headmirror is an independent open-access website dedicated to the production and dissemination of high-quality educational content for otolaryngology residents, staff, interested medical students and also affiliated specialties including audiology. Currently, the site has a core team of approximately 30 otolaryngology residents and staff from many centers across the U.S. who contribute on a regular basis, and several hundred less common contributors from the U.S. and internationally.

Our vision is to create a high-quality resource that is freely available to trainees in the U.S. and globally, including developing countries, where such resources may be limited. The irony of the current education delivery model is that the best resources are often hidden behind a firewall or subscription, and the end users who will benefit most often do not have the financial means to access such content.

What is the new OtoRecall app?

OtoRecall is a free, spaced repetition-based, active recall flashcard app designed to optimize learning and retention for trainees in the field of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery and overlapping specialties. With thousands of cards covering every subspecialty within ENT, the app aims to provide a high-yield, easily accessible but equally comprehensive resource for trainees amidst a busy schedule.

What inspired you to create Headmirror?

The surgical specialty of otolaryngology is relatively small when compared to internal medicine, general surgery or other more broad areas of medicine. Because of this, medical students may not become exposed to this specialty until later in training, which is unfortunate. Furthermore, otolaryngology remains one of the more competitive specialties to match into, and thus, early exposure and planning can improve match success. One of the main goals of the site is then to enhance early visibility of the specialty and to attract the “best and the brightest” applicants to our field.

Otolarynology is a tremendous specialty with incredible breadth, encompassing seven distinct subspecialties that collectively care for men and women, and infants to nonagenarians – as we say, from dura to pleura (and sometimes intradural as well). Also, because we are a relatively small specialty, educational resources within our field are less developed than other larger counterparts. We saw an opportunity to develop new content according to perceived educational gaps, and also to organize and pull together existing content from other resources that people may not know about. I have to say, Headmirror has been one of the most fun, exciting and rewarding projects I have ever been a part of. I love our team the collective enthusiasm and energy for education everyone radiates.

Who visits Headmirror?

We’ve received over one million page hits to-date from viewers worldwide. We receive from between 200 to 400 unique viewers daily and have approximately 6,000 regular subscribers to our podcast “ENT in a Nutshell.” At the end of 2021, we registered about 12,000 unique visitors per month, a 50% year over year increase. We believe that most of our viewers are residents, interested medical studies and otolaryngology staff; however, we have received a number of emails from providers of related fields, including audiology, neurology, neurosurgery, primary care doctors, emergency medicine physicians and even industry partners.

There is a wide variety of content on the Headmirror website. Which section(s) do your visitors find most valuable and why?

We have general content about the field of otolaryngology and also about all the different subspecialties. With regard to educational content, our main sections include:

  • A surgical video atlas containing high resolution, narrated surgical videos
  • A podcast that covers medical educational material, but also business of medicine topics
  • A 3D temporal bone atlas
  • A section that summarizes recent clinical guidelines
  • A survival guide providing concise information for on-call consults

Lisa Aubert and Tony Manna

Cochlear Americas recognizes Lisa Aubert as new President for the region

Company thanks outgoing President Tony Manna for his years of service, congratulates him on retirement

Cochlear Limited (ASX: COH), the global leader in implantable hearing solutions, celebrates the promotion of Lisa Aubert, currently the Vice President of Sales for Cochlear Americas, to the role of President for Cochlear Americas on April 1, 2022. The role is responsible for the development and execution of the strategic direction for the United States and Canadian operations.

Additionally, Cochlear honors Tony Manna, the outgoing President of Cochlear Americas, and commends him on his 17 years of service as he heads into retirement.

Aubert has been with Cochlear for 28 years, working across three continents including Africa, Europe and North America. She started working as a Clinical Specialist in Cochlear Europe in 1994, then proceeded on to Clinical Manager, Area Manager for Northern Europe & South Africa, General Manager of UK/Ireland/South Africa and Regional Director of Europe North; then within Cochlear Americas, she went on to Director of Clinical Services, Regional Director of Sales, Director of Professional Marketing and Vice President of Sales.

Aubert has been working in the cochlear implant industry for more than 30 years and was once a customer of Cochlear’s, as a primary research audiologist working on the original cochlear implant clinical trials in the United Kingdom. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in communication disorders, a Master of Arts in audiology and a Master of Business Administration. Outside of work, Aubert enjoys spending time with her family, traveling, exploring national parks, and skiing and hiking throughout Colorado.

“I’m pleased to pass the torch to Lisa as she takes the lead of this incredible organization. Her broad range of experience within Cochlear and her deep knowledge and understanding of our customers has prepared her for this role,” said Manna. “I know Lisa agrees with this sentiment that it’s an honor to get to come to work every day at a ‘get-to job.’ We get to help people hear and we get to work with a team that’s mission driven, and what a wonderful journey it has been.”

In his retirement, Manna looks forward to spending more time with his wife and two adult children, staying active, gardening, traveling, and volunteering in the community.

“I’m humbled by the opportunity to lead this extraordinary region within Cochlear,” said Aubert. “Through Tony’s leadership, we’ve delivered strong growth in sales revenue by expanding awareness and driving referrals for our implantable hearing solutions, and we’ve focused on customer service and support to strengthen our competitive position. I’m inspired daily by our recipients and our employees who tirelessly serve our customers, and I will work hard to continue to deliver results so we can help more people hear and service those who will be with us for a lifetime.”
