In the implantable solutions space, we recognize how limited access and awareness to this technology impacts pursuing this path to better hearing. While both are gradually improving, there is still much work to be done. As we near the 10-year milestone of the Cochlear™ Provider Network (CPN), one of our primary goals has been to overcome these barriers.
The CPN enables independent dispensing audiology/ENT practices to expand their services to include cochlear implants and partner with area surgeons for the medical services. We are grateful for the collaboration of over 400 clinics nationwide and more than 100 surgeons within the Cochlear Provider Network. Over the years, we have gained invaluable insights from our network of providers and are excited to share some of their best practices.
Introducing cochlear implants early in counseling discussions
Top CPN providers across the country have found that introducing cochlear implants early and often in the patient’s hearing journey is a best practice. By having discussions about implants during standard counseling appointments, patients understand earlier that cochlear implants are the next technology step for hearing loss progression. By normalizing the technology, they find this can reduce patient resistance for next steps.
At Cochlear, we understand the benefits of these early discussions and are excited to support them with our new Cochlear Edge materials. There are several counseling materials specific to supporting discussions during the annual hearing evaluation to help offices introduce implants early and often. The Edge materials will soon be available across all clinics and we can’t wait to share these great tools.
Implantable solution education for all staff members
Cochlear Provider Network offices are often traditional audiology private practices, with typically one or two providers offering implantable services. However, to fully integrate implantable solutions, top-performing CPN providers ensure that all staff members are knowledgeable about implants. From front office personnel to practitioners seeing hearing aid patients, they provide regular education and office tools about implantable solutions. Offices report this helps create efficiencies in providing the care, from scheduling patients correctly to streamlining internal referrals for evaluations. By ensuring all staff are part of the process they can also more effectively position their office as truly serving patients for “all things” hearing.
Regular communication with surgeon
Top CPNs and their surgeon partners report that a key driver of success is regular communication. Recently one of our CPN Surgeon partners, Dr. Shawn Stevens at Barrow Neurological Institute, discussed his work with Cochlear Provider Network clinics, explaining how he builds strong relationships with these clinics to expand access and keep treatment closer to home for patients. Tune in to his interview on our new podcast, Beyond the Decibels, and learn strategies to grow your practice while ensuring that patients receive the best care possible.
